Fellow Legionnaires, October was another great month and now we’re
headed into the busiest part of the year so don’t hesitate to volunteer for
our Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas and New Year party set up and clean
up. Let’s close out this year on a good note and a profitable one for the
Post! Together we can make this Post a place that will be the envy of the
town. The Post is shaping up and looking sharp inside and out. Many
thanks to Mike Ramirez, Ralph Quinonez, Ron Davis, Ben Saenz, Gabe
Beltran and all the others that worked on our new roof. Great job men!
One of our goals for very near future is to have our newsletters on line.
The purpose of this is so you are able to check our web site: http://
www.alhambrapost139.org/ and view the monthly newsletters and all
other updates we make throughout the month. You don't even need
email service at your house. You can access any PC at your local library
and check this site. You don't even need an email account. But you can
create an email yahoo or gmail account if you want to start getting
emails and even, Gulp, get on facebook!
Would like to thank Jimmy Schmidt for putting out a great early bird
breakfast with help from Ron Davis and Veronica Ramirez and Marlena
Uranga for working at the bar, all went well.
On a sad note we will miss our comrade Gene Nash. A loyal member and
fine Marine. May he rest in peace.

Fellow Legionnaires,
I want to thank you for your continued support of your American Legion Post!
Events such as last month’s Luau and more recently, Early Bird breakfast, are
not only a good opportunity to for the Post to raise money, but for members to
connect and swap service stories. With the addition of the overhead projector
we have been showing movies with an increasing frequency. For those who
haven’t been to 139 lately, we have shifted our emphasis to revitalizing the
outside of the building; recently the exterior was sandblasted as a precursor
to a fresh application of stucco, to not only make you proud of the historic
building, but to appeal to possible hall renters as well!
In other news, some of you may be aware that bank fees are changing/
increasing, which may be as a result of the Credit Card Act of 2009 into law
May 22, 2009. The new requirements were phased in over a 15-month period.
The first batch of new credit card protections took effect Aug. 20, 2009,
and the majority of provisions started on Feb. 22, 2010, while the final batch
began Aug. 22, 2010.
The law limits the way financial institutions can charge certain fees, however
as a possible side effect, banks have looked elsewhere to recoup some of
those fees. One tactic I have personally seen is the implementation of the
monthly bank fee for not maintaining a certain balance in your checking/
savings account. Citi bank recently sent out letters to customers stating if they
did not maintain at least $6,000 amongst their accounts, a $15 a month fee
would be levied (rather harsh, but then again it’s Citi bank!). Chase is charging
customers as well for not maintaining $1,500 in their accounts. And as you
may have heard, Bank of America (the primary account for John Howard
Strain, Post 139) will be surcharging customers $5 a month if they use their
debit card to make a payment in that month.
I thought having ATMs and debit cards was to do away with cash society…it
appears not!
So bottom line, if you are like most people and ignore bank mail, especially
when it’s not a statement, you may want to take another look or call your
bank and see if you will be effected.
AND IF YOU ARE…you may want to look at a credit union, they have a reputation
for being more ‘user friendly’.
Take care and God bless!

The first Thanksgiving has spawned all sorts of mythology, lore and mystery. But, the first
Thanksgiving was a simpler event than many people think.
For instance, the first Thanksgiving took place in 1621 when the pilgrims and Indians sat
down at the bargaining table together and the pilgrims said, "We’ll give you some sand for
Long Island, New York". The Indians said "What kind of sand?"
