ALHAMBRA POST 139

The 65th anniversary of D-Day was Sat., June 6, 2009. Coincidentally, this was also the day the City of Alhambra dedicated its newly constructed Veteran’s Memorial at Alhambra Memorial Park. The ceremony began with a brief introduction and invocation, followed by a Presentation of Colors by Garfield High School JROTC and address by retired Captain Nat B. Read, USNR. A ribbon-cutting followed the raising of the American Flag—a flag that had previously been flown at the White House. It was presented to the City by Congressman Adam Schiff (29th Congressional District).

The completion of the Alhambra Veteran’s Memorial was made possible in large measure through a federal grant secured through the assistance of Congressman Schiff, who along with Assemblymember Mike Eng (49th Assembly District), the Alhambra City Council and representatives from the Alhambra Legion Post #139 participated in the dedication ceremony.
The Memorial, located at the north end of Alhambra Park, stands as a reminder to all that “freedom is not free.” A quote by Thomas Jefferson, which states that “The Price of Freedom is Eternal Vigilance,” provides the memorial’s official motto which is inscribed on a curved wall located near the Memorial Rock. The location for the memorial is a serene setting with meandering paths, abundant plants and trees, seating, and a special water feature – a constantly flowing waterfall – all encouraging a sense of rest, reflection, and respect.  The waterfall, and the flag pole, upon which the American Flag and a POW-MIA flag fly, will be lighted 24/7. Bronze medallions of each of the five branches of the armed forces are incorporated into the base of the water feature.

Throughout the city’s history there has been a strong sense of dedication to our country’s armed forces, which provides a legacy of valor, sacrifice, loyalty and perseverance. With the completion of the Memorial, the City of Alhambra now has a dedicated and peaceful setting where residents and others can go to remember the brave and heroic men and women who have served our country and sacrificed for our freedom—both in peacetime and during war.

The Alhambra Veterans' Memorial was dedicated on June 6, 2009 in a public ceremony which included a
